People and communities

Tamang communities form the largest group; Sherpa and Yolmo communities hold the high Helambu valleys; Newar, Chhetri, Brahmin, Gurung and Dalit communities live across the middle hills. Sindhupalchok is, by design and by fact, a district of many peoples.

History

Sindhupalchok suffered the heaviest losses of the 2015 earthquake — more than 3,400 residents — and its rebuilding, from Chautara to Helambu, has become a reference case for owner-driven rural reconstruction.

Culture and traditions

Yolmo and Tamang gompas, Newar-style bazaar towns like Bahrabise, and Hindu hill shrines share the same valleys — the district's pluralism is visible in a single day's drive.

Food and agriculture

Tamang thukpa and sel roti, Newa samay baji in the bazaars, and the district's famous citrus and cardamom from the Indrawati slopes.
