Explore Dhanusha District: geography, communities, heritage, food, trekking routes, best time to visit and practical details.
The Mithila heartland of the eastern Terai, stitched together by dozens of sacred ponds.
People and communities
Maithil Brahmin, Yadav, Teli, Kushwaha, Musahar, Dusadh and other Madhesi communities with Newar, Pahadi and Muslim communities — the city of Janaki draws pilgrims from across the plains.
History
Janakpur is the legendary capital of King Janaka of Mithila, centre of Maithili scholarship for a millennium. The modern marble Janaki Mandir was completed in 1911 with patronage from Tikamgarh, India.
Culture and traditions
Mithila painting, pond-side evening aartis, and the Ram-Janaki wedding re-enactment (Vivah Panchami) define the city's calendar. Language here is Maithili — a major literary language, not a dialect.
Food and agriculture
Madhesi thalis with bhat, masiyaura, tarua and ghiu; sweets like anarsa and tilaur are Chhath essentials.
