People and communities

Newar communities are the majority and cultural core, alongside Brahmin, Chhetri, Tamang, Magar and other communities who have settled in the growing suburbs.

History

Bhaktapur (Khwopa) flourished under the Malla kings — the 55-Window Palace and much of Durbar Square date to the 17th–18th centuries. The 2015 earthquake damaged parts of the square; reconstruction of landmarks like the Chyasilin Mandap followed documented restoration practice.

Culture and traditions

Newar Guthi societies maintain the festival calendar — Bisket Jatra's great chariot battle between the upper and lower town opens the Nepali New Year each mid-April.

Food and agriculture

Juju dhau (king curd), bara, chatamari, kwati, and the famous 'king curd' shops of the Durbar area.
