The disaster lasted seconds; displacement, grief, rescue and reconstruction unfolded across years and very different landscapes.
At 11:56 a.m. on 25 April 2015, the ground ruptured northwest of Kathmandu. Masonry walls opened, slopes failed and dust hid city squares. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake became a single date in global memory, but survivors endured a sequence: aftershocks, rain, winter, paperwork, rebuilding and the daily work of mourning.
What happened geologically?
The earthquake occurred on the Main Himalayan Thrust, where the Indian plate pushes beneath Eurasia. Rupture propagated eastward, producing intense shaking across central Nepal. Local soil and construction affected damage. A magnitude number alone cannot explain why one neighbourhood lost many buildings while another retained more.
Why were homes so vulnerable?
Unreinforced stone and brick masonry, weak connections, heavy roofs and irregular additions failed under lateral movement. Rural access slowed rescue and assessment. Nepal used owner-driven reconstruction grants tied to inspection stages and earthquake-resistant standards. The approach aimed to let families manage rebuilding while technical programmes trained masons. Landlessness, documentation, labour shortages and rising costs delayed many households. A completed house count cannot by itself measure whether livelihoods and community networks recovered.
What does safer rebuilding require?
Earthquake-resistant construction depends on continuous load paths, wall ties, appropriate bands, good materials and supervision—not a token amount of concrete. Retrofitting schools, health posts and older housing remains important. Preparedness also includes open spaces, drills, household plans and reliable local communication.
How should disaster stories be told?
Avoid reducing survivors to before-and-after images. Name dates and verified figures, distinguish main shock from aftershocks and show local agency. Recovery has no clean ending: debt, disability, heritage maintenance and migration continue. The honest conclusion is not that Nepal ‘bounced back,’ but that people rebuilt within constraints that still matter.

The 25 April 2015 Gorkha earthquake and its aftershocks damaged homes, schools, roads, temples and public infrastructure across central Nepal. Housing is a social decision
Reconstruction guidance has to work for people who own land, rent rooms, live on steep slopes, farm seasonally or depend on a damaged shop. Stronger construction is necessary, yet a technically correct house can fail socially if a family cannot afford maintenance or if the design ignores cooking, livestock and winter heat. The post-earthquake period made this clear: resilience depends on finance, local masons, public trust and access to services as much as on concrete and steel.
What visitors can do now
Visit reopened heritage areas with patience and follow barriers, photography rules and local instructions. Spend with local businesses and use guides who can explain which monuments are original, reconstructed or still under study. Do not turn damaged buildings into backdrops for risky photographs. When a source gives a date or number, quote the source; when a community is still debating a reconstruction, describe the debate instead of presenting a single tidy ending.
